The New Mexico Environment Department Food Safety Bureau protects public health by permitting, inspecting and providing technical assistance to food establishments in New Mexico to prevent foodborne illness. The Bureau also permits events where food will be served, like county and state fairs.

The New Mexico Environment Department is responsible for permitting hemp warehouses, extraction facilities, manufacturing facilities, and processing facilities throughout New Mexico to ensure consumer health is protected.

On November 30, 2021, the New Mexico Finance Authority Oversight Committee approved the Cannabis Microbusiness Loan Program, a new $5 million program that will offer affordable loans to licensed cannabis microbusinesses.
